Popular Question: Which Dance Shoes Should I Get?

My affiliate links are at the bottom of this post if you would like to skip ahead. My students often ask me about what shoes to wear for Salsa dancing. You want a shoe that will allow you to move freely and easily, but that will also provide enough support to help you maintain your balance.  When it comes to Salsa dancing, the type of shoe you wear can vary depending on personal preference and the style of Salsa you’re dancing. However, in general, a shoe with a smooth, non-slip sole is a good choice. This will help you to move easily on the dance floor.

If you are a beginner learning to dance, make sure that you are comfortable, and supported, and that your shoes don’t grip the floor, as that can torque your knees and cause pain or injury. When you are ready to invest in dance shoes, examine what is important to you. Do you enjoy style and comfort? Is price point a concern? What about durability or uniqueness?

Some people prefer to dance in heels, while others prefer flat-soled shoes. It’s important to choose a shoe that feels comfortable and supportive to you, and that allows you to move freely and easily while dancing. Ultimately, the most important thing is to find a shoe that works well for you and your dancing style.

Special to note, if you take dance class during inclement weather, it is great to take a pair of dance shoes to change into for class. This way you’re able to take class comfortably even when you’ve come in from a deluge of rain.

It’s a good idea to choose a shoe that fits well and is in good condition.

As for my personal style, I enjoy mixing it up. Sometimes, I’ll go to an event in my heels, with my rhinestones sparkling. Sometimes, I enjoy my flats. For very long dance events and marathons, I’ll wear a couple of pairs throughout the night.

When teaching, I rotate shoes since I teach a high volume of classes. I wear Taygras or jazz shoes depending on the day and style of class. I wear heels for performances and special events.

Usually, for outdoor events like SummerDance, you’ll find me in my Taygras. I’ve been wearing this style of vegan Brazilian-made shoe for over 10 years (Back then I was wearing Jingas).

Let’s dance soon!
