Social Dancing can save the world…
or on a more micro level at least your lunch hour. Leave it to DJ El Caobo to bring some sizzle to the lunch hour with Latin music and open dancing at the Thompson Center in downtown Chicago. “Mambo on the Concourse” is an open event from 12:00-1:00pm every third Thursday of the month. Numbers swelled come 12:15 when people came from neighboring skyscrapers to social dance.
Some people brought their lunch while others picked something up from the businesses conveniently located on the concourse. I saw some of the club circuit dancers, some of the summer dance crowd, and a lot of people who joined in the dancing.
Dancers moving in an organic harmony, swaying to the music made lunch better for the many people who stopped to watch, enjoying the music and the view. With such a diverse group of people dancing there were a few surprised faces. Many people don’t realize that Latin dances like salsa are truly becoming world dances. You can visit almost any country and find a salsa scene and many places from Israel to Korea host their own salsa Congresses.
