Latin Street Congreso 2012

I love Latin dancing!

Whether it is salsa, bachata, cha cha, cumbia, or rumba, I want to dance all of the time.  One of the unique things that happens in the Latin dance community is Congress or Congresos. It’s similar to a convention where people gather together to do workshops, team building exercises, and network. Except our team building includes dance parties that end at three or four in the morning and our networking can be done poolside.

One of my favorite things about going to a salsa Congress is meeting people. Getting to dance with someone I’ve never seen before and may never see again. It is a magical meeting because once the last song is played, the dust settles and we go home even if that home is thousands of miles away. I feel as though I have been to Italy, Spain, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Australia by the end of the night. Dance is all about nonverbal communication and it’s most intricate form matter where you are in the world matter what language you speak you can find a way to connect through dance. Dance is present in every ancient culture. It is who we are as humans.
We communicate. We sing. We dance.
So when I attend Congress, it is for the chance to practice my craft but even more so it is a time to connect with people who under normal circumstances I would not have met. I highly recommend attending a Congress or even dancing at a dance club or social. AND make sure to dance with the new faces! Let’s share the love and the joy that dancing can to bring with new friends. Let’s keep the world dancing.

See you on the dance floor,
Denita Inez
