Thank you for attending this afternoon’s showcase with Desueño Dance.
Desueño is a dance company that focuses on performing choreography inspired by African and Latin rhythms. Since its inception, Desueño has performed and taught at a myriad of events including Chicago Summer Dance, Chicago Dance Month, Mambo Mayhem at the Promontory, Beethoven’s Metamorphosis, and various private and corporate events. At this evening’s show, we will showcase a variety of Desueño repertoire choreographed by Desueño’s Director Denita Inez. We also welcome our guest performers. Thank you to all of our guest artists.

Imagine walking into a cool antique library. The shelf near the back has a book slightly out of place. You readjust it and the shelf slides to the side revealing a hidden stairwell. Your curiosity leads you through the corridor and down the steps. Dim lighting leads you into an open space with music drifting into a room that appears to be a lounge. There is a set of thick velvet curtains at the back. They slowly open to reveal a stage. A gravily voice breathes from the darkness “Jazz Cat”.

Sisters Denita and Julia dance this fun Mambo duet. This piece is a testament to the transformative nature of dance. My sister has always supported my dance journey but she had actually danced herself. She would attend my recitals, take me to competitions, and pick me up from events. A few years ago she took her first Latin dance class with me. Today is a beautiful moment, where I am sharing the stage with my sister as a fellow artist.

Groove with Me II

Parties are fun to have and to attend. This piece was inspired by the first person on the dance floor. The moment of stepping away from the wall and access key moving to the dance floor. The bravery it takes to be the first to the floor calling your community to join you in merriment. Groove with me II is a call to move. An exhalation of your village joining in the moment.
