I took a break from writing since recital season hit. I’m glad I took the time to really soak in the experience. I really enjoy creating choreography and developing young dancers.
So what has happened in my mini-verse? I created Desueño, a ladies styling group, and we just celebrated our one year anniversary. It’s been a year of growth and cool opportunities. We performed fourteen times over the course of the year, while sharing our love of dancing with many people.
Desueño means “of a dream”. I wanted to create a dance company that could move to any song, any music, any beat, and do it well. I envisioned a fusion group that would bring people together. I want to say thank you to all of the people who have invited us out to dance and encouraged us to keep working and to those who will be with us for the next stage of our journey.
I’ve invited a guest on this blog, Diana, who will be joining the team for the remainder of the summer. I met Diana at a salsa event hosted by the Ballroom and Latin Dance Association for the University of Chicago. We reconnected in January after an open call for Desueño. When I’m holding auditions I ask why people want to work with me. She said that she enjoyed choreography and that the women were strong in their movements. One thing that I want to hold firmly is that Desueño Ladies will be strong dancers and artists. Look out for her insightful posts about her experience.
